Longmont, Colorado
Artist’s Statement: I paint all subjects – landscape, still life, portraits – but most often local scenes around the plains near my home in Boulder County and in the Front Range mountains of Colorado. My passion for the out-of-doors finds release in my painting, as the majesty of my surroundings reveals itself in the light that I aspire to capture. I most enjoy the feel of wet oil paint, so most of my work is alla prima, and I prefer to paint from life.
Short Biography: My interest in art was stimulated by my mother, Doris, and by my high school art teacher, an inspiring man named Ken Beatty. My “formal” art training was limited to his classes and a 2-week summer camp at the University of Wisconsin, for which he secured me a scholarship. Painting went by the wayside when I went to college and pursued a career outside the arts. I began painting again as a hobby in 2006 after a decades-long hiatus. I have since retired from computer programming, leaving me more time to pursue painting.
I began to show my work in 2015.
I have studied with a variety of Colorado artists, among them (in alphabetical order) Chuck Ceraso, Kim English, Marc Hanson, Margaret Jensen, Michael Lynch, Jeanne MacKenzie, George Strickland and John Taft. I also study, through books and videos, the work of artists I admire, and I enjoy critique sessions with my colleagues at plein air paint-outs. I am grateful to all of these artists for their encouragement and shared wisdom.
I am especially grateful to Margaret Jensen and John Taft for being such inspiring and patient mentors.
