Red Door Gallery will be hosting a class taught by Jan von Stein, for beginning calligraphers. Jan has a Bachelor degree in Art Education from Bowling Green State University and a Master degree from UW- Platteville. She has taught calligraphy for over 30 years. The word calligraphy originates from two Greek words: kallos, meaning ‘beauty’, and graphien, meaning ‘to write’, translating to ‘beautiful writing’. This class is suggested for first time calligraphers. It will focus on major principles and the basic pen strokes used in calligraphy. Students will be introduced to and practicing a “Fundamental Hand” which will easily prepare them for writing in other styles of calligraphy. Students will need a cartridge style calligraphy pen with an Italic nib (one that is flat with a straight edge) Brands such as Scheaffer, Staedtler and Leisure Arts are familiar calligraphy pens. The class will be at the Red Door Gallery in Richland Center July 10, 10:00-noon. Registration fee is $30. To register call Red Door Gallery
